AIDMI’s Work on Gender-Based Violence in Disasters

By AIDMI

The All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI) works to integrate gender-based violence (GBV) prevention into disaster risk reduction and climate resilience across India and South Asia. Through its engagement with disaster-affected communities—including women-led small businesses, migrant workers, and urban poor groups—AIDMI highlights that GBV is a predictable and preventable risk during disasters.

AIDMI’s approach combines community-based research, training, and action. Using participatory methods such as Appreciative Inquiry, it supports women and local institutions to identify safety risks in evacuation routes, shelters, workplaces, and public spaces—especially during extreme heat, floods, and displacement. It also builds capacity to link early warning with safe and gender-sensitive action.

At the policy level, AIDMI collaborates with institutions such as NDMA, state authorities, and regional networks like Duryog Nivaran, aligning with global frameworks including the Sendai Framework and UNDRR priorities to promote protection, dignity, and inclusion.

Key areas of work include:

  • Integrating GBV into Heat Action Plans and urban resilience
  • Strengthening women’s leadership in disaster governance
  • Linking livelihood protection with safety and dignity
  • Building evidence on GBV risks in climate and disaster contexts

“For AIDMI, resilience is not only about surviving disasters—it is about ensuring women live and work without fear before, during, and after crises.”
