KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

SOUTHASIADISASTERS.NET

The uniqueness of the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute’s (AIDMI) publication, Southasiadisasters. net, are many: only local such publication, the only publication combining action and learning, the only publication drawing out voices of the affected population, and the only publication at the intersection of humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and changing climate adaptation. Launched to address local NGO demand in May 2005, Southasiadisasters.net has been observing, reviewing, debating, capturing, and reporting on the individuals, institutions, and policy issues in India and beyond in South Asia.

Publications for community organisations, government agencies, institutes, and organisations – Southasiadisasters.net (in English) – are welcomed online worldwide, including over 18 authorities, 11 UN agencies, 15 networks, many local organisations, and individual researchers and practitioners. We have recently completed 224 issues of Southasiadisasters.net. This success was possible due to the contributions of over 1,900 writers from 750 organisations in India and 67 countries, covering 50 disasters, spanning 46 themes, and engaging with 16 important national and international policy discourses. Each issue is unique and grounded in an emerging theme in the field of disaster risk reduction.

It is the longest-lasting and first local publication in the field of disaster risk reduction in South Asia, covering humanitarian action and learning, as well as adaptation to and mitigation of a changing climate. Through this publication, AIDMI has successfully enhanced knowledge and innovation to support effective DRR in India and beyond across South Asia.

Southasiadisasters.net reaches over 30,000 regular readers worldwide who have reached out to AIDMI, a diverse group that includes practitioners, policymakers, academicians, humanitarian workers, and community leaders, as well as affected people. Importantly, its easy-to-read and practice-orientated style has ensured that the voices and knowledge of vulnerable communities remain accessible to all. Often, local languages are invited to the pages.

EXCHANGE FOR CHANGE GLOBAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

AIDMI started its internship programme in 1997 with the idea of inviting students, the leaders of the future, to the grassroots reality of the humanitarian sector to mitigate these issues. By working with the policymakers, practitioners, partners, and critics involved in the humanitarian sector in South Asia, students become aware of the main challenges it faces today. They become committed to the field of work and learn to combine their academic skills and knowledge with practical application. 150 interns from 33 countries and 65 universities came to work under the Exchange for Change Global Internship Programme.
