The uniqueness of the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute’s (AIDMI) publication, Southasiadisasters.net, is many: it is the only local such publication, the only publication combining action and learning, the only publication drawing out voices of the affected population, and the only publication at the intersection of humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and changing climate adaptation. Launched to address local NGO demand in May 2005, Southasiadisasters.net has been observing, reviewing, debating, capturing, and reporting on the individuals, institutions, and policy issues in India and beyond in South Asia.

Launched in May 2005 in response to demand from local NGOs, Southasiadisasters.net has continuously observed, reviewed, discussed, documented, and shared lessons concerning people, institutions, policies, and practices shaping disaster risk reduction and humanitarian action.

The publication serves community organisations, government agencies, academic institutions, humanitarian organisations, researchers, practitioners, and networks worldwide. Its readership and contributors include representatives from authorities, UN agencies, national and international networks, civil society organisations, and individual experts.

AIDMI has completed 230 issues of Southasiadisasters.net, made possible through contributions from more than 1,900 writers representing 750 organisations across India and 67 countries. Collectively, the issues have addressed 50 disasters, 46 themes, and 16 significant national and international policy discourses.

Each issue focuses on an emerging concern in disaster risk reduction and draws on experience, reflection, and practice.

As one of South Asia’s longest-running local publications in the field, Southasiadisasters.net has helped strengthen knowledge, dialogue, and innovation for effective DRR, humanitarian action, and adaptation to a changing climate in India and across the region.

Today, Southasiadisasters.net reaches more than 40,000 regular readers worldwide who have connected with AIDMI, including practitioners, policymakers, academics, humanitarian workers, community leaders, and disaster-affected people.

Its accessible and practice-oriented format helps ensure that the experiences, knowledge, and priorities of vulnerable communities remain part of wider humanitarian and policy discussions. Contributions and perspectives in local languages are also welcomed whenever possible.

EXPERIENCE LEARNING SERIES: A Deep Dive into Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience

The Experience Learning Series (ELS) is an AIDMI knowledge product offering in-depth exploration of important themes related to disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, humanitarian action, and sustainable development.

Since its inception in 1999, the series has documented AIDMI’s field experience, research, reflection, and learning alongside insights from a wide range of stakeholders.

With 83 issues published, ELS provides a platform for examining practical challenges, emerging ideas, innovations, and lessons that can strengthen disaster resilience and inform policy and practice.

EXCHANGE FOR CHANGE GLOBAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

AIDMI launched its internship programme in 1997 with a simple but important idea: to bring students—the future leaders of the humanitarian and development sectors—closer to the realities faced by vulnerable and disaster-affected communities.

The Exchange for Change Global Internship Programme enables students to engage with grassroots realities while learning from policymakers, practitioners, communities, partners, and critical voices working across the humanitarian sector in South Asia.

Through this experience, interns gain a deeper understanding of contemporary humanitarian and disaster risk reduction challenges. They are encouraged to connect their academic knowledge and skills with practical action, reflection, and learning.

To date, the programme has welcomed 150 interns from 33 countries and 65 universities, creating a global exchange of ideas, experiences, and perspectives around humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, resilience, and sustainable development.

The programme reflects AIDMI’s belief that meaningful knowledge exchange is two-way: interns learn from communities and practitioners, while their research, questions, skills, and international perspectives contribute to AIDMI’s ongoing learning.
