Delhi Building Collapse: Why Safer Buildings and Stronger Risk Reduction Matter

Following the tragic building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, Mr. Mihir R. Bhatt, Director, All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), was invited by NewsX to discuss the key issues of building safety, unsafe urban development, and the risks faced by students living in PG and hostel accommodation.

The discussion highlights the need to move beyond emergency response and give greater attention to disaster risk reduction, regular structural safety checks, enforcement of building regulations, accountability, and safer accommodation for students and other urban residents for education and first job relocation.

The Satya Niketan incident is an important reminder that access to education must also include access to safe housing, safe infrastructure, and a secure living environment for all students of India.
