Twenty-five years after the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, critical questions remain about equity, justice, and long-term disaster recovery in the Global South. While the Gujarat earthquake is often cited as a landmark in India’s disaster management history, its recovery experiences continue to offer vital lessons—both learned and forgotten—for contemporary disaster risk governance.

An international online webinar titled “Equality, Justice and Disaster Resilience in Times of Cascades of Disasters in the Global South” brings together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to reflect on just disaster recovery in the context of cascading and compounding risks.

The webinar is jointly organised by the Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI), Tampere University, Research Council of Finland, and the Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies (JTSDS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), with participation from national and international institutions working at the intersection of research, policy, and practice.

🎤 Speakers:

  • Dr. Marjaana Jauhola, Tampere Peace Research Institute, Tampere University, Finland
  • Mr. Shyam Gadhavi, Program Specialist – Risk and Resilience, UNICEF, Kachchh, India
  • Prof. Jacquleen Joseph, Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies, TISS, Mumbai

Focus of the Webinar

The discussion will examine:

  • Cascading and long-term impacts of disasters on vulnerable communities
  • Disaster recovery as a question of justice, inclusion, and rights
  • Lessons from Gujarat (2001) and the Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004)
  • Institutional, policy, and financing mechanisms for inclusive recovery
  • The role of local knowledge, life histories, and community institutions

A dedicated discussion segment will invite each speaker to share forward-looking reflections on strengthening just and inclusive disaster recovery. These insights will be consolidated into a joint policy brief for wider circulation among relevant stakeholders.

The webinar is open to researchers, policymakers, practitioners, students, and all those interested in disaster recovery, resilience, and social justice.
