💬 About the Roundtable

The All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI) is organising a virtual roundtable on “Extreme Heat is a Slow-Onset and Unequal Urban Disaster” on Friday, September 25, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM IST.

Extreme heat is increasingly affecting workers, women, commuters, migrants, low-income communities, and residents of informal settlements. Its impacts are often invisible but serious, affecting health, livelihoods, sleep, mobility, water access, mental wellbeing, and household security.

The roundtable will discuss how heat action can move beyond alerts and become more people-centred, locally grounded, and socially just.

📘 Launch of a Special Issue

AIDMI will launch a special issue of Southasiadisasters.net on “Extreme Heat is a Slow-Onset and Unequal Urban Disaster.” The issue includes perspectives on social investment, worker protection, mental health, participatory knowledge, informal women workers, anticipatory action, urban heat inequality, and community heat resilience.

1. Recognise extreme heat as a slow-onset and unequal urban disaster.
2. Highlight community and worker-centred evidence.
3. Identify practical actions for Heat Action Plans, cooling infrastructure, social protection, and urban resilience.

1. Heat, Health, Livelihood, and Inequality: How extreme heat affects workers’ health, income, safety, and dignity.
2. Community Knowledge and Local Action: How participatory knowledge, women’s collectives, and citizen monitoring can make heat risks visible.
3. Financing and Systems for Urban Heat Resilience: How partnerships, social investment, and local governance can scale shade, water, rest spaces, cooling centres, early warning, and livelihood protection.
