AIDMI with the University of Auckland, and the Copenhagen Centre for Disaster Research, University of Copenhagen has organised the Virtual Roundtable on ‘Postcolonial Futures for Disaster Risk Reduction in South Asia’, Thursday, July 18, 2024; 02:00 pm to 03:00 pm (IST). This discussion is guided by the special issue of Southasiadisasters.net produced by the panel members which aims to explore postcolonial futures for disaster risk reduction in South Asia. The roundtable will offer pathways towards rethinking disaster risk and enhancing people’s everyday lives and livelihoods, moving away and ahead from mostly Western concepts, frameworks, methodologies, and tools to more plural pathways.
Case studies from across the region showcase how we can try redefine harm and hardship beyond mere concepts like hazard, vulnerability, and resilience as well as a world of meanings in between these words. These studies will show how people cope with adversity throughout their lives and provide examples of alternative approaches grounded in local world views to mitigate harm and hardship effectively.
As UNDRR leads the way ahead to Sendai Framework results, this roundtable offers local and long-term lessons from and by the affected populations from various countries.
