Women's Leadership in Reducing Disaster Risks

Since 1989, AIDMI has been at the forefront of promoting women’s leadership in disaster risk reduction (DRR) across India and South Asia. The programme builds the capacity of women leaders, farmers, entrepreneurs, and community members to take active roles in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. By integrating gender perspectives into disaster management planning, AIDMI strengthens resilience through women-led initiatives in livelihoods, education, health, and climate adaptation. From pioneering microinsurance for women and facilitating women-led action planning during cyclones, to training women farmers in climate-smart agriculture and supporting women in informal businesses to cope with heatwaves and pandemics, the initiative has consistently advanced gender equality and resilience. Rooted in the priorities of the Sendai Framework, AIDMI continues to ensure that women’s voices shape risk governance, resilience investments, and sustainable recovery.
