The Small Business Disaster Micro-Insurance Programme, developed by the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI) with support from the Humanitarian Innovation Fund (HIF) and in collaboration with Stanford University and United India Insurance Company, explores innovative ways to protect small and informal enterprises from disaster losses. Piloted in Puri, Cuddalore, and Guwahati, the project—anchored in AIDMI’s Afat Vimo initiative—demonstrates how tailored micro-insurance can strengthen local markets, accelerate recovery, and build long-term resilience for urban poor entrepreneurs who form the backbone of India’s economy.
